The first-person guide to Sofia, Bulgaria-

It is nice when you can go to a place that is reviving. It makes the occasion even more special, when you have in mind little less than a hundred years of history. Since its very establishment, Влайкова (Vlaikova) is a place of social importance. It is named after Maria Vlaikova – a generous lady contributed for the realization of the building and its purpose. This happened around the year 1926 and ever since at least 5 generations have passed though it which is huge!

With time Vlaikova has been there like an inherent part of the city and a collective memory of ours. Some know it as a community centre (читалище ha), others as a cinema but now Vlaikova is speeding up. The cinema is still there but the whole building flashes a new ВЛКВ light – the one painted by the colors of diligence, pure thought, youth modernity and old architecture. There is a smell as well, reminding us of newly painted bathrooms allowing for multiple activities like art installations, happenings and fun as all around the place. Isn’t this a clear signal for a concept? Like ZOOFIA exhibition – a perfect opening for the new history of this place and the city itself.
And the bar offers drinks and the nice people are there. Plus, the music set is carefully selected. We should now make a group indulgence into good time and sweet talks. ye ye
Find ВЛКВ Club (enjoy Cyrillic) on 11 Tsar Ivan Asen II.

April 8th, 2010ClubsYesterday the police chased us and in my efforts to remember how this happened I felt like writing an article. Now I discover that stress can be a powerful tool for getting some inspiration. That is why I think Florimont Expo Center deserves our attention, as it has begun to be a place for interesting parties. Though the name sounds funny, the place is not bad at all. It offers a beautiful view of Sofia and Vitosha mountain while sitting in huge sofas, dancing or hanging out on one of the balconies. That is because Florimont Expo is situated literary on Sofia’s circular road, right across the National Historical Museum. It is hardly reachable by any public transport or if you decide to try this way, you need carefully to plan the trip and estimate the walking part, otherwise you risk getting lost. My advice is to go there by a car driven by experienced local party maniac or a taxi.
The place itself is big and easily adaptable for various purposes – it is either suitable for a wild d’n’b party or something more fancy like a cocktail. Here comes the strangest part – it has a sushi restaurant at one of its ends. I think that you cannot both eat sushi and party as it closes at some point while the party continues.
The best part is that you can make as much noise as you want.

February 21st, 2010ClubsThe Box Club is like a breath of fresh air for the alternative music lovers. It is also a place where the alternative music doers thrive – just check the club’s schedule and there’s no doubt – the events are planned for months in a row. Apart from foreign guests, their stage holds solid Bulgarian presence, not to mention the crowd – always dedicated and supportive.
The music style really matters, otherwise why would we go? To get drunk? No. To socialize? Of course not! To find a girlfriend? wtf?
See, the music really matters and some of the most general suggestions I can give you are hardcore, metal, Gothic, d’n'b, underground hip-hop and … many more because my fantasy cannot give definitions for everything. You just have to feel it even if you don’t understand it. If it happens so, you should be glad that you are participating at a music event you can’t really interpret properly. Lucky you.
The Box Club is on 41 Alexander Stamboliiski blvd.

Sofia Live Club is a sparkling place to be – the one that Sofia needed badly because of the live music performances and the type of events as a whole.
Inside, there are a lot of things you can look at and be impressed with. The main entrance and the following corridor create a visual illusion, making one think that the ceiling is exceptionally high while the corridor – abnormally long. Then the toilets and the wardrobe area merge – they are like an open space which allows for unrestricted movements while you prepare to enter into the main hall. Next, however, the restrictions come with the two doors – you are either a VIP or not.
Irrespective of your status, the stage is huge. If I were a musician, I would feel very happy on it and when a video wall with the size of the stage rises behind me, I would not want to get off it and would sing until the last muscle of my body sores or the security guys come. Then exhausted but forced by the crowd, I would sing my last encore and go home.
Sofia Live Club is literary under the National Palace of Culture (NDK) – you have to go down into the underpass and look for the fountains in the shape of metal balls or the red carpet which leads to the main entrance.

Oh, that dubstep party at Monday made me believe that the weekend could successfully be extended! We can resist the Friday, the Saturday, the Sunday, and go party at Monday, though with pains in the back!
First of all there were so many people both in front and inside Stroezha that we literary found it hard to reach the closest to the door bar. Then, elbowing our way through the crowd and pass by the walls, we reached the source of the music, the DJs from Mirizma who made the people delirious.
The mythical proportions that Stroezha bar has acquired cannot be compared to any other place. It welcomes people with different tastes in underground culture, often with disastrous consequences – imagine what happens when a whole bar starts pogo. You don’t get the feeling that an earthquake has started but you see a live whirlpool from which you can’t really escape. Well, in the bathroom maybe is safe as you get the chance to be alone for a while.
I’ve seen such phenomenon only there, happening on a regular basis, making me respectful. Furthermore, I know people whose appearance at the entrances of various clubs makes the security guards united in defense, in Stroezha however, they are treated like V.I.Ps. Amazing.
Visit Stroezha Bar anytime. The address is Studentski Grad Block 23, entrance B; Tel: 962 59 77

What I like about Yalta club is that its design allows movement. Of course, movement when it is not crammed which happens often but this is because of the DJs. They are the main reason for lack of space. Otherwise, one can freely move up and down, out and in as the club is on two floors and has a garden in the front. So, this movement may be a result of your mood. If you feel like chilling out, then you would prefer the second floor which is equipped with huge stools, almost like beds. From there a beautiful view opens, allowing you to secretly watch what’s going on outside and inside. However, my observations show that people rarely relax. When seen from above, they are a colourful and lively unity that changes its form all the time – hands wave, heads nod, legs strech in a wild dance which ends with the dawn.
The garden has different appearance during the day. Apart that the designer chairs are more visible, it does not hints for wild people dancing. Instead it imprints calmness and timelessness which is not affected by the dynamics of the busy work hours. So cool.

Apart from all the equipment an entertaining place has, Funkiss club owns a table soccer and bathrooms that are almost 1/4 the size of the main room – qualities that are distinctive and not easy to find in Sofia. The space inside is smartly organized so that one can move freely around and enjoy the beautiful view that is revealed from there. Funkiss is situated higher than normal since you have to climb a good deal of stairs but the effort is worthwile because you both warm up for the party and prepare to meet nice people. Nice clubs are visited by nice people, after all.
The quality of the sound is good, the lights are fine, there is a visual wall as well, however, the thing that could be improved is the interior. It is not bad, it is just that it is not memorable. When I try to think of details, I cannot recollect anything or maybe the problem with the memorization lies within me.
I have to go and check again.
Funkiss club is at the building of the National Palace of Culture (N.D.K.), from the side more close to the Lovers’ bridge.

Fans rock bar is a place for rock fans, though sometimes the music gets harder.
There is a stage for live performances and when a band is playing, the party gets crazier. The music is totally loud and people really seem to enjoy the atmosphere.
The Hard Art-Rock interior design, as it is defined on the bar’s web side http://www.rockbarfans.com/, corresponds to the whole idea and invites the visitors to help themselves with the drinks. Part of this design is also a huge video wall, often showing concerts or football matches.

However, the coolest thing is that Fans works every night and the chances to listen to a live performance are really good.
Drinks for two would be 20 Leva and usually if a band is going to perform, there is an admission that would be no more than 10 Leva.
Address: 114 Vasil Levski blvd.
