March 26th, 2009Clubs
Apart from all the equipment an entertaining place has, Funkiss club owns a table soccer and bathrooms that are almost 1/4 the size of the main room – qualities that are distinctive and not easy to find in Sofia. The space inside is smartly organized so that one can move freely around and enjoy the beautiful view that is revealed from there. Funkiss is situated higher than normal since you have to climb a good deal of stairs but the effort is worthwile because you both warm up for the party and prepare to meet nice people. Nice clubs are visited by nice people, after all.
The quality of the sound is good, the lights are fine, there is a visual wall as well, however, the thing that could be improved is the interior. It is not bad, it is just that it is not memorable. When I try to think of details, I cannot recollect anything or maybe the problem with the memorization lies within me.
I have to go and check again.
Funkiss club is at the building of the National Palace of Culture (N.D.K.), from the side more close to the Lovers’ bridge.

An interesting jazz event is about to happen tonight at Tri Ushi Club. I crave for such initiatives so much and when an event of this kind is approaching, I get very excited, curious and determined not to miss it.
The organizers, still unknown to me up to this moment, promise to start with the music of an Austrian trio called Triosk. Their style is electronically oriented which sounds good and only leaves me to expect more.
Tri Ushi club is on 3 Tri Ushi Street, funny enough not to forget it but I will explain some other time. Still, the club is almost next to O.Ч.З.
I have taken the beautiful poster made for the event from the organizers’ blog without permission, so I hope I won’t be sued and sent in jail.

Behold clubbers, I would like to draw your attention to an event that would surely have positive effect on your mood!
The Djs from the Porno BPM formation have proved long ago their capability of making the crowd burst in an outrageous dance. All night long that is.
It seems that they challenge us yet again and it is impossible not to react.
Their music is innovative and vigorous, but at the same time it fits into the framework of tech-house, undergroud house and breaks. This is a perfect reason to visit them and to enjoy their approach to music.
The party is going to be this Saturday at Funkiss Club – situated on one of the sides of the National Palace of Culture, the one that is more close to the Lovers’ Bridge. You have to climb the stairs once you hear from where the music comes.
Admission: 6 Leva (3 Euro)

March 12th, 2009Museums
The long and rich history of Bulgaria deserves one of the largest historical museums on the Balkans. Its collection of more than 650,000 items scrutinizes the political, military, religious and cultural development of our nation. In other words, from the Paleolithic era up to the present-day events, or from lots of coins, crowns, and clothes up to swords, shields and skeletons, making it the only place where one can gain a complete and overall picture of our dynamic history.
The huge building and the garden that surrounds it are part of the complex of Boyana residency – where our president lives. This fact additionally contributes to the grandeur and the magnificence of the place, inviting tourists to pay attention to every single detail, to take a walk in the garden and to enjoy the beautiful mountain view in a calm and pleasant atmosphere.
The biggest disadvantage of the museum, however, is its location since it is situated in the outskirts of Sofia. It is not an easy task to reach it, especially if you don’t have a car. Taking a taxi is an option and from the center to there it will cost you around 10 Leva (5 Euro). The other option is with the public transport, in particular trolley number 2 which goes along Patriarch Evtimii boulevard. When you get on it be patient because you have to reach its final station – where the circular road is. Then, following the signs it won’t be difficult to see it, as it is very close.
The entrance is 10 Leva but every last Sunday of the month you can enjoy the whole collection for free!
The address is 16 Vitoshko Lale str.

We are witnessing a change in the way this magnum opus looks!
I like the iron cell surrounding the leftovers of the massive construction – it lends a very futuristic appearance. It can be used as a final scene of an apocalyptic movie where the protagonist fights the evil powers to save the world.

It also signals for transition from one state to another. As far as my experience shows, however, this process of transformation won’t be that fast having in mind how many years it took the decision-makers to start the initiative for renewing it.
Only time will unfold whether the monument would be given its original image or a new one. I am so impatient to see!

March 3rd, 2009Bars & Cafes, Restaurants
This restaurant or maybe pub or maybe neither of these two, but still having features of an eating-place, is different than the spots we usually visit. Fashion and pretence are epithets that don’t fit at all and if you seek a spacious and modern atmosphere, you won’t find it there.
Instead you’ll discover a confined and intimate setting – with a fireplace, an old piano, or a wall decorated with strange old ski. Not to forget those paintings of prominent Bulgarian intellectuals… they all probably eat there. There is a kind of bohemian air inside, at least you get some from the paintings – they give you a sense that you are eating in a place that is not an ordinary one. Until the waitress comes and brings you back to reality, urging you in an irritated manner to order as fast as possible, without asking questions, if possible.
My advice is to be patient and to disregard such details because the quality of the food is good. And the menu is different every day. The biggest disadvantage, however, is that there is no menu in English, so you have to bring a translator or hope that you will be understood. Good luck with the latter.
Lunch for two with wine would be 20 or 25 Leva (approximately 13 Euro). There is a garden which functions only when it is warm.
Sam si Doidoh is on 73 Tzar Samuil Str, near Faith Club, but finding it might be tricky since there is no clear sign but a writing on the wall made with chalk.
