The garden in front of Ivan Vazov National Theatre is the oldest public park in Sofia and one of the most social urban areas in town. It’s usually full of kids and running dogs, while the most avid chess players occupy the specially built chess tables right next to the city gallery. In the summer the park welcomes hundreds of the city’s youths who prefer meeting on the meadows and park benches instead of the nearby numerous bars. The most popular drinks are beer and crème de menthe (surprisingly popular here). A beautiful fountain sits right across the magnificent building of the theatre, you can also enjoy many of the City Gallery sculptures, scattered throughout the garden. The glass pavilion behind the fountain was recently made into a boutique reading place – donate a book to get a membership.
