The Boyana Church is famous for its medieval frescoes and it is featured as a cultural monument on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. It is located in the suburb of Boyana, at the foot of Vitosha mountain.
The church was constructed in several stages, the first of which was in the 10th – 11th century, when a small cross-domed church was built. In the 13th century a narthex was built to the west façade and a small chapel above it. In the middle of the 19th century a two-storey entrance hall was added.
