Brace yourself. The largest state museum, opened in 2015 and funnily dubbed by some as the “Bulgarian Louvre”, is a lot like a maze in which you can get lost for hours thanks to its 28 exhibition halls, situated on four floors. We’re fans of the building and the courtyard, but can’t wait for a decent café, a better bookstore and improved visitor information. We strongly recommend Square 500 where you can see two out of more than forty thousand Bulgarian and foreign artworks, collected over the last 120 years by the state. The Bulgarian collection includes works of our greatest classic painters like Vladimir “The Master” Dimitrov, as well as very successful contemporary artists like Nedko Solakov.
