The women’s market is the oldest open-air market in Sofia, dating back from before the Liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878. You will find a great variety of fruit and vegetables here, but also many exotic foods from the Middle East such as spices and hummus. The market’s name is derived from a Turkish tradition, which was still dominant during Ottoman rule, when women were only allowed to visit the local village market or markets for specialized goods for women’s use. In the surrounding streets there is an interesting variety of exotic shops, butcheries, bakeries and barber shops, which are typical of the Middle East.

#sоSofia tip: Buy delicious tomatoes or try delicious Arabic specialties from the pubs around.
