We invite you to take a stroll through the centre of Sofia, combining the city’s natural charm with our cultural heritage and exceptionally delicious local cuisine. Start on Oborishte Street, where you can enjoy the wonderful culinary offerings of restaurants, brunch spots and wine gardens.
After that, be sure to head to the Doctors’ Garden. It is a favourite spot for all Sofia residents, whether for a weekend outing or simply an evening stroll. The park takes its name from the Doctors’ Monument, which stands within the grounds. It was built in honour of the doctors who died during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, and the names of 531 medical workers are carved into it.
Doktorka Garden is situated next to two of the capital’s most magnificent and significant buildings. The first is the National Library. As well as its beautiful architecture, the library represents an exceptional part of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage. The building is named after Saints Cyril and Methodius, who created and spread the Slavic alphabet, and whose monument stands in front of it. The library’s collection comprises over 70,000 items, including works and publications in various languages, published all over the world.
Next to the National Library stands Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” – the oldest and largest higher education institution in Bulgaria. It currently has over 22,000 students. An interesting fact is that the building houses the skeleton of a deuterium – a prehistoric mammal that lived several thousand years ago. It is also home to the Museum of Mineralogy – the oldest repository of rocks and minerals in Bulgaria, which also boasts the country’s largest collection of meteorites. The university also harbours a special room that is highly unusual for an educational institution, yet extremely interesting: a climbing wall in the dome of the building. Annual international competitions are held there.
