The spirit of Sofia flows in waves around the fountain, situated centrally opposite the theatre, and the people who gather in the park around it are a colourful and open-minded crowd. Find the bench reserved for the cheerful street musicians and enjoy the fun alongside the boisterous laughter of happy people. From wedding and prom photo shoots, through swing dancing and folk dances, to games such as chess, backgammon or belote and beer-drinking contests, these are among the favourite pastimes of visitors to the park. The National Theatre is Bulgaria’s iconic home of theatrical art, named after the legendary Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov; over the years, it has staged plays by iconic writers and directors, featuring some of Bulgaria’s most beloved actors. The park surrounding the theatre is filled with sculptures and art, and there are also many iconic galleries nearby – such as the Sofia City Art Gallery, and the private galleries Struktura and Credo Bonum.
