The State Gallery “Sofia Arsenal – Museum of Contemporary Art” showcases Bulgarian painting, photography, modern prints, audio-visual installations and screenings. The long name is a play on words with the name of the nearby Arsenalski Boulevard and the history of the building, constructed in the late 19th century to house the headquarters of the Reserve Officers’ School. SAMSI has charming exhibition halls, a sculpture park and serious plans to expand its spaces. The exhibitions are curated to reflect “the layers of meaning from different cultures and eras” and to interpret them in a new way. A serious undertaking.
