You simply cannot miss this gleaming church with its gilded domes – the Russian Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker. The crypt of the church houses the tomb of Archbishop Seraphim Sobolev, who was the head of the Russian Orthodox communities in Bulgaria between 1921 and 1950 and is regarded as a miracle-worker by many Orthodox Christians. He was canonised in 2016. According to popular belief, if people write a letter to him with a sincere plea for help or a heartfelt wish, he will help them. Many people come here for this very reason. The church was built between 1907 and 1914 and is distinguished by its five gilded domes. Unique in Bulgaria, the iconostasis of the Russian church is made entirely of ceramic and is a replica of that in St Vladimir’s Cathedral in Kyiv.
