In the early 1960s, work began on the construction of ‘Severen Park’ between the ‘Nadezhda’ and ‘Svoboda’ housing estates and the industrial area of the ‘Iliyantsi’ district. Work continued for around 20 years. It is likely that a large, monumental horizontal sundial was installed in the park in the early 1980s. It features a gnomon inscribed with the word ‘NORD’ (north) and a dial marked with the hours from 6 to 18.

Over the years, this structure—unique to Sofia—has been vandalised on numerous occasions, and it has not been properly maintained. Nevertheless, the sundial in ‘Severen Park’ is a favourite spot for all residents of the ‘Nadezhda’ neighbourhood who have visited it at least once.
