Few capital cities can boast a large mountain that is effectively a neighbourhood of the city, just 15 minutes from the centre. Vitosha Mountain has long been the backbone and lungs of Sofia, offering skiing in winter and unique sights, nature trails, waterfalls and mountain huts in a quiet, peaceful and exceptionally beautiful setting just a few kilometres away.
Starting with the “Simeonovo-Aleko” cable car – the longest gondola lift in Bulgaria at 6,270 metres – you’ll be able to enjoy the unique view that unfolds before you. The journey takes about 20 minutes and your final destination is the Aleko mountain hut, situated at an altitude of 1,840 m. At the hut, you will find a cosy atmosphere and can enjoy the food and drinks on offer. During the warmer months, Aleko is the ideal spot for a walk, a picnic and sunbathing, whilst in winter it transforms into a ski slope for a quick weekend getaway.
From there, you can take a path to Cherni Vrah – one of the most frequently climbed peaks in Bulgaria and the highest point of the Vitosha Mountains at 2,290 metres. Once you reach the summit, you will be amazed by the beauty that unfolds before you. From a bird’s-eye view, you’ll be able to enjoy a view of Sofia and two of Bulgaria’s largest mountain ranges – Stara Planina and Rila. Need we even mention the wonderful photos you’ll be able to take?
If you’d like to take in the most picturesque view of Sofia, then you simply must visit Kopitoto. This spot has several connections to Sofia — first and foremost, it’s a popular gathering place for many young people from Sofia. If you visit in the evening, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the view of Sofia lit up at night, as well as meet young people from Sofia who drive up there for the view, listen to music and enjoy each other’s company. Kopitoto is also associated with Bulgaria’s most renowned mountaineer – Boyan Petrov (1973–2018), who climbed 10 peaks over 8,000 metres high. The route from Belovodski Road to Kopitoto is dedicated to the memory of the mountaineer, as it was his daily training route whilst he was preparing for upcoming climbs. That is why we challenge the more adventurous among you who love mountaineering to hike the ‘Bojan Petrov Trail’.
Vitosha also offers a walk to the picturesque Boyana Waterfall — a route of moderate difficulty, but one that is well worth every step. The path to the waterfall offers stunning views as it winds its way into the heart of the mountain.
The mountain huts you can visit in the area are sure to charm you with their cosy atmosphere and stunning natural surroundings — among the best known are Kamen Del, Edelweiss, Ophelia and Momina Skala, and at each of them you can enjoy a delicious barbecue or a hot soup. Recent renovations have created a new wave of modern huts offering facilities for co-working and home offices, alongside incredible views, a calming atmosphere and delicious home-cooked food. The Septemvri, Kompozitorite and Balkaniti huts are among the most popular.
