This is yet another fine example of Sofia’s rich and varied history. The western gate of the Serdica fortress is one of the most significant structures built in the 2nd century during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. The entire archaeological complex includes key elements of the city’s fortification system – a pentagonal gate tower, a triangular tower by the fortress wall, a section of the fortress wall and even remains of the street network.
