It is the oldest open-air market in Sofia and has existed since before the Liberation in 1878. Here you will find a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, as well as many exotic foods from the Middle East, such as spices and hummus. The market’s name dates back to the Ottoman era, when, according to Turkish custom, women were not allowed to visit any markets other than the village market or those intended exclusively for women. In the streets around the market, you’ll also find exotic shops, butchers, bakeries and barbershops, which are typical of the Middle East.
